AFTER THE LAST ELF

  1. AFTER THE LAST ELF - A scratchboard drawing size 11 x 14. It appears in the magazine, "Weird Tales, Summer, 1988".

Scratchboard artwork has a special visual excitement that stands apart from the other drawing media because of it's unique stark contrast and visual sharpness. If you look at the sword blade in this drawing you will see what I mean, the whiteness of the blade seems to "glow" against the black background.

It takes an artist who is also a master craftsman to produce wonderful scratchboard drawings, and two such artists that I admire are Lynd Ward and Fritz Eichenberg. The books they illustrated are "special," they are prized possessions of book collectors. They inspired me to try using scratchboard, and this drawing of the "Last Elf" is one of my few efforts at that media.
